The 70th Anniversary Celebrations get underway with the commissioning of a new Unit Flag at a ceremony in St.Patrick’s Church. (L-R) Carmel Cunningham, 7th Macaoimh; Billy Collins, 7th Scouts; David Rogers, Regional Commissioner; John Hennebry, Asst. Unit Leader; Cathy Wallis, Beaver Leader; Owen Riordan, Venturer Leader; Ian Sinnott, 13th Scouts; Pat Murphy, Pipe Major; George Kavanagh, 3rd Macaoimh; Kieran O’Connor, 3rd Scouts.

In March, the Unit’s 70th anniversary programme was officially launched at the De La Salle Centre in Stephen’s Street. We believe that having seen thousands of young people benefit and learn from Scouting in this unit, that we have a lot to celebrate. This milestone will be marked and celebrated not just within the unit but in Waterford City as a whole.

One of the first moves has been the launch of the new De La Salle Beaver Colony. The Unit has also commissioned a new unit flag and badge. Other events will include “Faithlegg 70” – a massive Unit weekend to be held from the 26th to the 28th of June, an open day, a 70 mile Leaders Walk and a commemorative mass parade. The Unit will also host and lead the 1998 Waterford and South Kilkenny Regional Mass and a special celebratory abroad camp is being held in Blackwell Court in Birmingham. It’s going to be an exciting year – the history of the Unit will be remembered and hopefully preparations will be made for the years to come. You can now read a History of the Unit which details some of the development and heritage of the De La Salle Scout Unit.
